The Only Children's Book on Organic Farming and the Importance

of Beneficial Insects

This is a story about a little girl named Lily, who wants a pet...well, she actually wants a bug for a pet.

She decides to venture into a neighbors organic garden to find a the perfect bug and ends up on adventure, meeting many characters and learning about what they do.

Each bug tells Lily why they cannot be her pet, and that they are needed in the garden.

At first Lily is sad, and then the brilliant butterfly helps her figure out a solution.

She decides to create a beautiful garden of her own, so all her bug friends will come visit her.

How this story

came to be...

I created this story as my graduate thesis from the Sustainable Agriculture Program at UC Santa Cruz in California.

While I was working at the UCSC Farm & Garden, i would give tours to school kids and observed how much they loved checking out bugs and hearing stories about what they do in the garden.

I decided to publish it years later, once I had my own children.

Recreating it for my own children...

After reading hundreds of children's books for my own girls, I realized that my story should be shared, but first it had to be rewritten.

With inspiration from the rhythmic writings of Dr. Seuss and with the artistic support of my mother, I recreated Don't Bug the Bugs.

The story is perfect for children who are learning to read or love story time, ideal for ages 2-8.

Kind Words

I love hearing from parents and other writers,

about how this book has made an impression

Jenny

Mother, Gardener, Award winning Author

"Thank you for your book and how it has inspired thoughtful conversations between us about beneficial insects in our organic garden, more about companion planting, plus natural potion projects -- and especially the beautiful relationships between Tulsi and ALL the bugs she encounters."

Lexie

Mother, Writer, and Health Educator

"Eva wants a roly-poly as a pet so Luke is reading her your Don't Bug the Bugs book 😍 he said, "she really knows how to write well! She's funny and you learn too!" ❤🐛🐞

Jeff

Ecologist, Writer, Environmental Studies Graduate @ UCSC

"This is an awesome book.  The illustrations are colorful and humorous, and I especially love the worm and the honey bee. The story is well written and will hopefully inspire children to spend time outside, in the garden.  I wish there was a book like this when I was younger."

Alexia

Mother and Health Coach

"Among the favorites on our bookshelf, my son loves your book.  Plus, I love the message.  Thank you."
